A town built around a port
Before the dock, Immingham was a quiet parish on the south bank of the Humber, known mainly for its link to the Pilgrim Fathers, who tried to leave England from near here in 1608. Work on the dock began in 1906, and once it opened the port gradually overshadowed the old village. Together with Grimsby, the port has been ranked the UK's largest by tonnage.
Housing followed the jobs. Homes spread along Pelham Road in the early 1930s, and after the Second World War the growth of industry along the south Humber bank brought a much bigger expansion. The Kennedy Way shopping centre and five-storey flats went up in the mid-1960s, followed by estates in the late 1960s and 1970s, with building continuing into the mid-1980s.
What that means for local lofts
Because so much of Immingham was built over a few decades, many homes share similar roof designs. Most houses here date from the post-war period onwards, with a smaller number of older properties in the original village area around St Andrew's Church.
1960s and 1970s houses
Homes from this era often have shallow-pitched roofs and, in later builds, trussed rafters. The original insulation, if any, was usually thin by today's standards. Over the years many have been topped up in patches, with gaps where tanks, pipes or cables get in the way.
1980s homes and bungalows
Later homes usually have more insulation, but it is often compressed by storage or disturbed by work such as rewiring. Bungalows have large roof spaces covering every room, so gaps are felt throughout the house.
Common issues near the Humber bank
Immingham sits on flat land beside the estuary, with little shelter from winds coming down the Humber or in off the North Sea. Common loft problems include:
- Thin or patchy insulation between the joists.
- Insulation squashed under boxes or boards laid straight on top.
- Hatches with no insulation or seal, letting warm air escape.
- Condensation on the roof underside, sometimes where vents have been covered.
If we see signs of damp, mould or damaged timber, we will point them out, but a roofer or qualified specialist should assess the cause before any insulation goes in.
Insulation that suits post-war roofs
Our main product is SuperQuilt multifoil from YBS Insulation. It is thin and usually fixed at the rafters, which can be handy in shallow roofs where you still want storage. Its published thermal figures come from tested assemblies, so the result in your home depends on correct installation, taped joints and the right air gaps.
Mineral wool is also a well-proven option for many Immingham lofts, especially open bungalow spaces, and PIR boards help where depth is tight. We will explain the differences and recommend what fits your roof. Whatever is chosen, ventilation at the eaves needs to stay clear. Our loft insulation page has more detail on each method.
Ladders, hatches and storage space
A lot of local lofts are only reachable with a stepladder. We fit loft ladders with insulated, sealed hatches, making the space safer and cutting a common draught. We also fit raised loft boarding that sits above the insulation, so you get storage without squashing it. Lofts with existing boards or ladders are fine too.
Flats and shared roofs
Immingham has a number of flats and maisonettes, including blocks built in the 1960s. Where a roof is shared, the loft is often the responsibility of a landlord, housing provider or management company rather than individual residents. If you live in a flat, check who looks after the roof before arranging any work. For houses and bungalows, the decision is simply yours, and we can survey the loft at a time that suits you. If your home is rented, your landlord will normally need to agree to insulation work before it can go ahead, so it is worth speaking to them first.

Loft insulation in Immingham: FAQs
My Immingham house was built in the 1970s. Is the loft insulation likely to be enough?
It varies. Many homes from that period were built with thin insulation that has since been topped up in patches. Some are well insulated, others have gaps or compressed areas. The only way to know is to look, which is what the free survey is for. We measure and check what is there and explain your options.
Do you cover villages around Immingham?
Yes. We visit homes in Immingham and nearby villages including Stallingborough, Habrough, Keelby, Healing and South and North Killingholme. Village homes range from older cottages to modern houses and bungalows, so we tailor suggestions to the loft we find on the free survey.
Can I board my loft for storage without losing insulation?
Yes. We fit raised boarding that lifts the storage floor above the insulation, so it keeps its depth and continues to work. Boards laid directly on joists over deep insulation squash it. We also make sure boarding does not block ventilation at the eaves.
Is multifoil suitable for shallow 1960s roofs?
It can be, because it is thin and fitted at the rafters. However, it needs careful installation with the right air gaps and sealed joints to perform as intended, and the roof must stay ventilated. In some shallow lofts mineral wool or PIR board may be more practical. We explain the options after the survey.
I have damp patches on my bedroom ceiling. Can you help?
We can look at the loft above and tell you what we see, such as condensation or wet insulation. However, damp patches can come from roof leaks, plumbing or other causes, and we do not diagnose these. A roofer or qualified specialist should assess the problem before any insulation work is planned.
