Loft Insulation in Hull & East Riding

Energy Loft Insulation fits SuperQuilt multifoil loft insulation, loft ladders, hatches and boarding across Hull and the East Riding. From terraced streets in the city to villages on the edge of the Wolds, every job starts with a free survey so we can look at your loft, its ventilation and how you want to use it before recommending anything.

Homes across Hull and the East Riding

Hull has a mix of housing that reflects its history. The city was heavily bombed in the Second World War, when more than 5,000 houses were destroyed and most of the rest were damaged, so many streets were rebuilt or replaced in the decades that followed. Alongside post-war council estates such as Bransholme, you will still find Victorian and Edwardian terraces and larger villas around the Avenues and Princes Avenue, which is a conservation area.

Outside the city, the picture changes. Beverley has a large conservation area around the Minster and its historic centre. Cottingham, which is one of several villages that claim to be the largest in England, has its own conservation area around Hallgate and King Street. Hessle, Anlaby and Willerby are largely suburban, with plenty of semi-detached houses and bungalows from the inter-war and post-war years. Brough has grown quickly with newer estates, while Market Weighton sits at the foot of the Wolds with a mix of older brick cottages and modern homes.

Typical loft issues we look for

Every loft is different, but some patterns come up again and again in homes of this age and type:

  • Thin or settled insulation. Older lofts often have a layer of mineral wool laid years ago that has compressed or been disturbed by storage.
  • Boarding laid straight on top. Boards fitted directly over insulation squash it, which reduces how well it works.
  • Uninsulated hatches. A thin hatch with no seal lets warm, moist air into the loft and cold draughts into the landing.
  • Blocked eaves. Insulation pushed into the eaves can stop air moving through the roof space and add to condensation risk.
  • Older roof coverings. Many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, which does not let moisture escape the way modern breathable membranes do.

Hull is also low-lying and saw serious flooding in June 2007, when more than 7,000 properties in the city were affected. Flooding is a ground-floor problem rather than a loft one, but it is a reminder that moisture management matters throughout the home. If we see signs of damp, rot or roof damage during a survey, we will point it out and recommend that a roofer or other qualified specialist takes a look before any insulation goes in.

What we can do in your loft

Our main service is SuperQuilt multifoil insulation, made by YBS Insulation. Its performance depends on correct installation, including sealed joints and the right air gaps, so we fit it to the manufacturer's instructions. We also install loft ladders and insulated hatches and raised loft boarding for storage, so you can use the space without crushing the insulation underneath. It does not matter whether your loft already has a ladder or boards; we work with what is there.

Not every loft suits the same approach. Mineral wool and PIR boards are perfectly valid options too, and part of the survey is explaining which would suit your roof and how you plan to use the space.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover the whole of Hull?

We cover Hull and the surrounding East Riding towns, including Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, Anlaby, Willerby, Brough and Market Weighton. The quickest way to check a specific address is to enter your postcode on our areas page or call us. If you are just outside the towns listed, it is still worth asking.

My house is in a conservation area. Can you still insulate the loft?

Insulating inside the loft does not usually change the outside of the building, but every property is different and listed buildings have their own rules. If your home is listed or you are unsure, check with East Riding of Yorkshire Council or Hull City Council before work starts. We can talk through the options during the survey.

Can you fit insulation if my loft already has boards down?

Yes. We work whether or not your loft already has boarding or a ladder. During the survey we look at what is under the existing boards and whether it has been squashed. If the boards need lifting or raising to make room for insulation, we will explain that and talk through the options with you first.

What happens if you find damp or damage in my loft?

We will show you what we have found and explain why it matters. We do not diagnose roof rot, structural problems or electrical faults ourselves, so we will recommend that a roofer, surveyor or electrician assesses it first. Once any issues are dealt with, we can come back and carry on with the insulation.
