An old settlement with a varied mix of homes
People have lived around Winterton for a very long time. Remains of several Roman villas, known for their mosaic pavements, have been found nearby, and the village appears in the Domesday Book. All Saints' Church has an Anglo-Saxon tower, and in the 19th century Winterton was one of the principal towns of North Lincolnshire, with a population of around 1,700 by 1860.
The centre of Winterton is a designated conservation area, with older houses and cottages along streets such as West Street and around the church. Outside that core, 20th-century growth brought semi-detached houses, council-built homes and a good number of bungalows, with more recent developments on the edges. The Winterton Show, run by the local Agricultural Society since 1872, is a reminder of how closely the town is tied to the farmland around it.
What Winterton lofts are typically like
Cottages and older houses
Older properties often have lower, more cramped loft spaces with irregular beams and limited access. Some have been extended over the years, so the roof space may be split into sections with different heights. Insulation in these lofts can be patchy, and the area around the hatch is often left bare.
Bungalows and post-war houses
Bungalows tend to have large, open lofts that cover the whole footprint of the house. They are often easier to work in, but because so much of the home sits directly under the roof, gaps in insulation are felt across every room. Semis from the same era usually have a water tank and years of stored items in the loft.
Problems we look out for
Winterton is surrounded by open farmland, and homes on the edges of town can feel wind getting into the roof space, especially through the eaves. Common issues include:
- Insulation that has thinned, settled or been disturbed by electricians and plumbers.
- Insulation pulled away from the eaves, leaving cold edges on bedroom ceilings.
- Unsealed hatches that act like a chimney for warm air.
- Condensation on the roof underside or on cold pipework.
We will mention anything that looks like damp, rot or a roof leak, but we do not diagnose these. A roofer or qualified surveyor should assess them before insulation goes in.
Weighing up insulation options
The product we install is SuperQuilt multifoil insulation from YBS Insulation. Fixed at the rafters, it can keep a loft floor free for storage and suit rooms where you want to use the roof space. Published thermal performance relates to tested assemblies, and in practice it depends on careful fitting with taped joints and appropriate air gaps.
Mineral wool between and over the joists is still a solid, familiar choice, and for many Winterton bungalows it may be the simplest answer. PIR board is another option for awkward or shallow areas. We will not claim one material suits everyone. The aim is to choose something that fits your roof and keeps the loft ventilated, so that condensation does not become a problem. For a general overview, see our guide to loft insulation options.
Using the space
If your loft is hard to reach, a fitted loft ladder with an insulated hatch can make a big difference to how safely you use it. For storage, we fit boarding raised above the insulation so it is not crushed. Bigger roof spaces can sometimes be turned into proper storage areas or more, and our loft makeovers page explains what is possible. We work in lofts with or without existing boards or ladders.
Water tanks and pipes
Many older Winterton homes still have a cold water tank in the loft. Once the ceiling below is insulated, the roof space becomes colder, so tanks and pipes need their own insulation to reduce the risk of freezing. We check these on the survey and make sure the area under the tank is left so a little warmth can rise to it.
Arranging a visit
A free survey covers access, the depth and condition of insulation, ventilation, signs of condensation, and anything in the way such as tanks or cables. We also ask what you want from the space. Our team has 40 years' experience in building and insulating homes and will talk you through options without pressure.
We cover Winterton and neighbouring villages including Winteringham, Roxby, Thealby and Appleby, along with the rest of North Lincolnshire. Call 07835 254 241 to book.

Loft insulation in Winterton: FAQs
Can you insulate the loft of an older cottage in Winterton?
Usually, yes. Older cottages often have low, awkward lofts with irregular timbers, so we look carefully at headroom, ventilation and access. Options might include mineral wool between the joists or multifoil at rafter level. If your home is listed or in the conservation area, check with North Lincolnshire Council before any work that changes the building's exterior or fabric.
My bungalow's bedrooms are cold. Could the loft be the reason?
It could be one reason. Bungalows have their whole ceiling under the roof, so thin or patchy insulation and an unsealed hatch affect every room. Other factors, such as windows, walls and heating, also play a part. The free survey shows what is happening in the loft so you can decide what to do next.
Which villages near Winterton do you visit?
We cover Winterton and surrounding villages including Winteringham, Roxby, Thealby, Appleby, West Halton, Burton upon Stather and Alkborough. Village homes range from old stone and brick cottages to modern bungalows, and we tailor our suggestions to the type of loft we find.
Does multifoil insulation need ventilation?
Yes. Like any loft insulation, multifoil has to be installed in a way that keeps the roof space ventilated and avoids trapping moisture. It also needs the correct air gaps to perform as the manufacturer intends. We check the existing ventilation during the survey and explain how the installation would allow for it.
Can you fit a loft ladder without insulating the whole loft?
Yes. We can fit a loft ladder and insulated hatch on their own, which often improves access and cuts a common draught. If you later decide to insulate or board the loft, the work can be done then. We are happy to quote for just the parts you need.
