Loft Insulation in Anlaby

Anlaby is an old village that became a suburb of Hull during the twentieth century, and most of its homes date from the 1930s onwards. Interwar semis, post-war estates towards Anlaby Common and plenty of bungalows all have their own loft quirks. We survey and insulate roof spaces across Anlaby, fitting SuperQuilt multifoil, loft ladders and boarding, starting with a free survey.

From Domesday village to Hull suburb

Anlaby appears in the Domesday Book, and the village still has reminders of its past, such as St Peter's church of 1865 and the site of Anlaby Hall. The big change came in the 1930s, when suburban housing began to spread out from Hull. After the Second World War building picked up again, and by the 1960s new streets had reached the edge of Anlaby Common, joining Anlaby to the city. Most of the expansion was complete by the 1970s.

That timeline gives Anlaby a fairly clear housing profile. Interwar semis with hipped roofs, rows of post-war semis and detached houses, and a good number of bungalows make up much of the village, with a few older properties near the original centre.

What Anlaby lofts typically look like

1930s semis

Hipped roofs are common on interwar houses. They look attractive from the street but reduce usable loft space, because the roof slopes in on three sides. Insulating right into the corners, where the roof meets the wall plate, takes care if you want to avoid cold spots without blocking ventilation at the eaves.

Post-war houses and bungalows

Homes from the 1950s to the 1970s often have lower roof pitches and, in later examples, trussed rafters. Bungalows have large loft areas relative to the home, so they can feel noticeably warmer once the whole loft is properly covered. Many owners also want to use that space for storage.

Some Anlaby bungalows and semis have been extended over the years, with flat-roofed or lean-to additions at the back. The join between the original loft and an extension roof is a common place for insulation to stop short, leaving a cold strip above a kitchen or bedroom.

Loft problems we often find

Most Anlaby lofts have some insulation already. The issues tend to come from age and use:

  • Original thin quilt that was never topped up, or top-ups laid unevenly
  • Insulation pushed back around pipes, tanks and cables
  • Hatches that are uninsulated and let warm air leak into the loft
  • Boards nailed straight onto joists, crushing the insulation beneath
  • Condensation forming on cold surfaces or on stored belongings

We will always mention anything that looks like it needs expert attention, such as possible damp, decayed timbers or electrical concerns, and suggest a qualified specialist assesses it. We do not diagnose those problems ourselves.

Choosing the right insulation

We install SuperQuilt multifoil insulation, a slim, layered product from YBS Insulation. It can be a good fit where homeowners want to keep a loft usable or where hipped roofs make deep rolls awkward to fit into tight corners. Multifoils are only as good as their installation: seams need taping, the right air gaps need leaving, and the manufacturer's performance figures relate to tested assemblies.

Mineral wool is still a widely used and effective option, and PIR boards have their place too. We will discuss which suits your roof. For more background, see our page on insulating a loft.

Ventilation stays important in every case. We keep eaves vents and airflow routes clear and explain condensation risk in general terms, without claiming any single method suits every home.

Storage, ladders and hatches

A lot of Anlaby homeowners want their loft to work harder. We fit loft boarding and storage platforms raised above the insulation, plus loft ladders and insulated hatches. It makes no difference whether there is already a ladder or some boarding in place; we work with what you have.

How the free survey works

A surveyor visits to look at access, the hatch, existing insulation, visible timbers, ventilation, pipes and any water tanks. We then explain our findings, outline the options and answer questions. You receive a written recommendation and can take your time deciding.

If you have particular concerns, such as a cold room above the garage or a musty smell in the loft, mention them. It helps the surveyor focus on the right areas.

We will also ask how you use the loft today and how you would like to use it. Someone who only goes up once a year for the Christmas decorations needs something different from a family wanting a boarded, lit storage area, and that affects where insulation goes and how it is fitted.

Getting to you in Anlaby

Most Anlaby roads have driveways or on-street parking, which makes access straightforward. Busier routes such as Anlaby Road and Beverley Road can be harder near peak times, so we plan arrival times accordingly. Anlaby is part of our wider Hull and East Riding area.

Loft insulation in Anlaby: FAQs

Do you cover Anlaby and Anlaby Common?

Yes. Anlaby, Anlaby Common and the nearby HU10 and HU4 streets are within our core Hull and East Riding coverage. If your address is near a boundary or you are not sure, send your postcode through the contact form and we will confirm before arranging a free survey.

My 1930s semi has a hipped roof. Can it be insulated properly?

Yes, though the corners need care. Hipped roofs slope in on three sides, which makes the edges tight to reach. We insulate as far as is safe while keeping eaves ventilation clear. SuperQuilt's slim profile can help in tight spaces, but we will discuss all options at the survey.

Can I board my loft without crushing the insulation?

Yes. We fit raised boarding that sits above the insulation, so it keeps its depth while giving you a solid floor for storage. Boards nailed directly onto joists often compress insulation underneath. We will plan the layout around your hatch, tanks and any ventilation routes.

Do you insulate lofts in bungalows?

We do, and bungalows are common across Anlaby. Their lofts cover every room in the home, so good coverage can make a noticeable difference to comfort. They also tend to have plenty of floor area for storage. The free survey will show what is there and what could be improved.

Will you check for condensation during the survey?

We look for signs such as damp felt, water marks or mould and check ventilation and insulation coverage. We can explain common contributing factors in general terms. If we see signs of damp, rot or structural concerns, we will recommend that a qualified specialist assesses them before any work goes ahead.
