How Willerby's homes came to be
In the 1840s Willerby had around 45 houses. The Hull to Barnsley line brought a station in 1885, and through the twentieth century the village grew into a suburb of Hull. Housing spread east along Kingston Road and Carr Lane by the mid-1900s, reached roughly its present western edge by the late 1960s, and later estates went up north of Carr Lane. More recently, the West Hill development off Great Gutter Lane added new homes from 2016.
The result is a suburb with a lot of mid-century housing: semis, detached houses with generous gardens and many bungalows, mixed with a few older cottages and modern infill.
Typical lofts in Willerby
Mid-century detached houses and semis
Many of these homes have traditional cut roofs with purlins and struts, which give decent headroom but create plenty of obstacles. Insulation was usually first laid decades ago, and in many cases has been topped up at least once, not always evenly.
Bungalows
Willerby has a good share of bungalows. Their lofts span the full footprint of the home, so they are often large and easy to stand in near the centre, though low near the eaves. Owners frequently want storage space as well as warmth.
Newer homes
Recent builds start with modern insulation levels, but trussed roofs and limited headroom make storage awkward. Laying boards on top of the joists without thought can squash the insulation flat.
Across all three types, garages and porches added later can leave odd-shaped roof spaces that connect to the main loft. These are easy to overlook, yet they are often where draughts and cold spots begin.
Common problems in the roof space
Cold bedrooms and draughty landings are the usual reasons people call us. When we look in the loft we often find:
- Gaps where insulation has been moved for wiring, aerials or plumbing
- An uninsulated hatch, or one that does not close tightly
- Insulation pushed into the eaves, blocking airflow
- Condensation marks on the felt or on items stored in the loft
- Stored belongings sitting directly on top of the insulation
Willerby has seen surface water flooding in the past, which led to a flood alleviation scheme being built in 2014 and 2015. That relates to the ground rather than lofts, but if we notice anything that looks like water ingress, damp or decaying timber during a survey, we will suggest that a qualified specialist investigates.
Insulation choices for Willerby homes
Our main product is SuperQuilt from YBS Insulation, a thin multifoil that can be fitted at ceiling level or at the rafters. It is useful in lofts where you want to keep storage or where the roof structure makes thick rolls awkward. Multifoils need careful fitting, with taped joints and correctly sized air gaps, and manufacturer figures apply to tested assemblies rather than every installation.
Mineral wool remains a perfectly good choice for many lofts, and PIR boards suit some situations, such as insulating sloping ceilings. We explain the options fairly. If you prefer to keep warmth in the roof itself, our roof and rafter insulation page explains how that works.
Ventilation still counts
We keep airflow at the eaves and ridge clear and talk through condensation risk in general terms. Every roof is different, so we never assume one approach suits all. Where a roof has been extended or partly converted, ventilation routes can be more complex, and we take time to trace them before recommending changes.
Ladders, hatches and boarding
We fit loft ladders, insulated hatches and raised boarding so you can store things without flattening the insulation. For a fuller transformation, a loft makeover can add lighting and a tidy, usable floor. Existing ladders and boards are no barrier; we can work around them or improve them.
The free survey and practical details
The surveyor checks access, insulation depth and coverage, visible timbers, ventilation and any tanks or pipes, then talks you through the options. You receive a written recommendation without pressure. Most Willerby homes have driveways, which makes access simple, and SuperQuilt rolls are light enough to carry through the house without fuss. We protect landings and carpets under the hatch and tidy up when the job is finished. If you have pets or a particular time that suits you, just tell us when you book. Our services in Willerby
Loft Insulation
New loft insulation, top-ups and replacement of old, flattened or damp material. We check what you have, explain the options plainly and fit it neatly, with or without an existing ladder or boarding.
SuperQuilt Multifoil Insulation
SuperQuilt is a thin, multi-layer reflective insulation made by YBS Insulation. We explain how it works, where it suits and where it does not, and fit it with the air gaps and taped joints it relies on.
Roof and Rafter Insulation
Insulation fitted at rafter level for lofts used for storage, hobby space or rooms in the roof. We plan it around ventilation, the roof underlay and moisture control, and involve a roofer where needed.
Loft Ladders and Hatches
Timber or aluminium loft ladders in folding, sliding or concertina styles, plus hatch enlarging, insulated and draught-sealed hatches. Safe, easy access whether or not you have insulation work done too.
Loft Boarding and Storage
Raised loft boarding on legs so storage sits above the insulation rather than squashing it. Safe walkways, sensible storage layouts and lighting, with honest advice on what joists can carry.
Loft Makeovers
Insulation, loft ladder, insulated hatch, raised boarding and lighting planned together and fitted in the right order, so you get a warm home below and a tidy, usable storage loft above.
Wall Insulation
Cavity, internal and external wall insulation explained in plain English. We survey your walls, check exposure, cavity condition and signs of damp, and give honest advice on what suits your home.
Loft Surveys and Condensation Checks
A careful look at your loft: insulation depth and condition, condensation and ventilation, old or wet material, and a plain-English walk-through of where heat may be escaping. Specialist issues are referred on.

Loft insulation in Willerby: FAQs
Do you cover Willerby and the rest of HU10?
Yes, Willerby, Kirk Ella, West Ella and the wider HU10 area sit within our core Hull and East Riding coverage. If you are unsure whether your address is included, send your postcode through the contact form and we will confirm quickly before arranging your free survey.
My Willerby bungalow has a large loft. Can it be insulated and boarded?
Yes. Bungalow lofts are often roomy enough for good storage once insulated. We use raised boarding so the insulation keeps its full depth, and we plan the layout around ventilation, the hatch and any tanks. The free survey will show how much usable space you could gain.
Can you work around purlins and struts in an older roof?
Yes. Traditional cut roofs have more timbers in the way, but they can be insulated carefully. Flexible products like SuperQuilt can be easier to fit around obstacles in some lofts, though mineral wool works well too. We will look at the structure and explain the approach we would suggest.
Will insulating the loft cause condensation?
Insulating a loft changes how warm the roof space is, so ventilation must be kept clear to manage moisture. We keep eaves and other airflow routes open and explain condensation risk in general terms. If we see signs of existing damp or decay, we will recommend a qualified specialist.
Do I need to be home for the survey?
Yes, ideally, so we can access the loft and talk through what we find. The visit is a good chance to ask questions about insulation types, storage or ladders. If someone else will let us in, please make sure they can show us the hatch.
