A Wolds market town with a growing population
Market Weighton was recorded in the Domesday Book and received a market charter in 1251. The town centre, with the Grade I listed All Saints' Church, is a designated conservation area. The town is famous as the home of William Bradley, the Yorkshire Giant, celebrated each May on Giant Bradley Day, and the Yorkshire Wolds Way passes through.
The railway closed in 1965, and parts of the old lines are now the Hudson Way and other paths. Even without a station, the town has grown, with the population rising from around 5,200 in 2001 to more than 7,400 in 2021. That growth means a lot of newer homes alongside the older stock.
Homes and lofts across the town
Older houses in the centre
Around High Street and the older lanes you find Georgian and Victorian brick properties and cottages. These can have lofts with chimney breasts, irregular timbers and ceilings that have been repaired many times. Ventilation and moisture need thinking about carefully before adding insulation.
Twentieth-century homes
Post-war semis, detached houses and bungalows make up much of the town. Many were insulated decades ago, and the original quilt is often thin, flattened or partly removed.
New-build estates
The newer developments on the edges of town tend to have trussed roofs with insulation already fitted. Here the questions are usually about storage and access rather than starting from scratch.
The surrounding villages, such as Goodmanham, Sancton and North Newbald, add another layer of variety. Many have older brick cottages, farmhouses and converted outbuildings, with roof spaces that have been altered piecemeal over a long time. Goodmanham and North Newbald are both conservation areas in their own right.
Problems we come across in YO43 lofts
- Insulation flattened by stored belongings
- Draughty, uninsulated hatches
- Gaps around the water tank, pipes and cable runs
- Condensation on cold surfaces where airflow is poor
- Difficult access with no ladder and a small hatch
The town sits on open countryside where it can be windy, which is a good reason to make sure hatches and gaps are sealed. If anything during a survey suggests damp, rot or electrical problems, we will recommend that a qualified specialist takes a look first.
Insulation options for Market Weighton homes
We install SuperQuilt multifoil loft insulation, made by YBS Insulation. It is thinner than traditional rolls, so it can suit lofts where storage matters or access is tight. Multifoils must be fitted with care, including taped joints and correct air gaps, and published performance belongs to tested assemblies rather than each individual home.
Mineral wool and PIR boards are reliable alternatives, and we will recommend whichever suits your loft. Our full list of services also covers wall insulation and loft inspections if you want a wider look at your home.
Keeping the loft ventilated
We keep eaves and other ventilation routes open and explain condensation risk in general terms. We do not claim one method suits every property.
Ladders, hatches and storage
A new loft ladder and an insulated hatch can make a loft far easier to use. We can also fit raised boarding so storage sits above the insulation without compressing it. If you already have boards or a ladder, we will work with them or upgrade them.
What happens at the free survey
We arrange a time, then check access, the hatch, insulation, timbers, ventilation and any tanks or pipes. We explain what we found, set out options, and send a written recommendation. You can ask anything, and there is no obligation.
If you have noticed something specific, such as a musty smell, a cold bedroom at the gable end or marks on the ceiling, mention it. It helps us look in the right places, although we may refer anything outside insulation to a suitable specialist.
Local practicalities
Parking around the town centre can be limited on busy days, while estates on the edge of town usually have driveways. Outlying villages may have narrow lanes or farm tracks, so let us know about access, gates or turning space when you book. Market Weighton is part of our Hull and East Riding coverage, and you can also reach us by email at info@energyloftinsulation.co.uk.

New loft insulation, top-ups and replacement of old, flattened or damp material. We check what you have, explain the options plainly and fit it neatly, with or without an existing ladder or boarding.

Insulation fitted at rafter level for lofts used for storage, hobby space or rooms in the roof. We plan it around ventilation, the roof underlay and moisture control, and involve a roofer where needed.
Loft Ladders and Hatches
Timber or aluminium loft ladders in folding, sliding or concertina styles, plus hatch enlarging, insulated and draught-sealed hatches. Safe, easy access whether or not you have insulation work done too.
Loft Boarding and Storage

Loft insulation in Market Weighton: FAQs
Do you cover Market Weighton and the YO43 villages?
Market Weighton is within our Hull and East Riding coverage, along with many nearby villages in YO43. Some rural addresses further out may need confirming, so the quickest way is to send your postcode through the contact form. We will reply to confirm before arranging a free survey.
Can you insulate an older house in the town centre?
Yes, but older properties need a careful approach. We look at timbers, ceilings and ventilation before recommending anything. The town centre is a conservation area, which mainly affects external changes. If your home is listed, check with East Riding of Yorkshire Council before alterations.
My new-build has a small hatch and no ladder. Can you help?
Yes. We can fit a loft ladder and, where the structure allows, a larger insulated hatch. Raised boarding can give you storage without crushing the insulation. If your home is still under a builder's warranty, check whether alterations affect it before work starts.
Is multifoil insulation suitable for a windy, rural location?
Multifoil can be used in many lofts, including rural homes. What matters most is good installation, sealed joints, correct air gaps and well-sealed hatches. Mineral wool and PIR are also good options. We will look at your loft and explain which approach we think fits.
Do you offer loft inspections without insulation work?
Yes, we carry out loft inspections and condensation assessments. We look at insulation, ventilation and any visible signs of moisture, then explain what we find in plain terms. Where something needs expert assessment, such as possible damp or rot, we will recommend a qualified specialist.
