Loft Insulation in Brough

Brough has grown quickly, with new homes at Brough South and around Elloughton joining older streets near the station and the Humber shore. That means anything from a recently built house with a trussed roof to a post-war semi or an older cottage. We survey and insulate lofts across HU15, fitting SuperQuilt multifoil, ladders and boarding, starting with a free survey.

A Roman town turned commuter hub

Brough was the Roman settlement of Petuaria and later a quiet riverside village. For much of the twentieth century it was known for aircraft manufacturing at Brough Aerodrome, where BAE Systems built the Hawk trainer until production ended in 2020. Its station on the Hull to Selby line, with direct trains to London and Leeds, has made it popular with commuters.

The town forms a civil parish with Elloughton, and there are conservation areas covering parts of Brough, Elloughton and Elloughton Dale Road. Large new developments, including the Brough South scheme, have added many homes in recent years, so the town now mixes older houses, mid-century estates and a lot of modern housing.

What we find in Brough lofts

Modern homes

Newer houses are built with insulation in place, but owners often want to use the loft for storage. Trussed roofs leave limited room, and boards placed straight onto the joists crush the insulation underneath. Hatches in new homes are sometimes small and poorly sealed.

Post-war semis and bungalows

Homes from the 1950s to 1980s often have insulation laid long ago, sometimes topped up and sometimes not. Gaps around pipes, tanks and cable runs are common, and the hatch may have no insulation at all.

Older cottages and villas

Older properties around the original village and Elloughton can have irregular timbers, chimney breasts and lath-and-plaster ceilings. These need a gentle approach and careful thought about ventilation.

Some of the older houses have also had rooms built into the roof, extensions added at the back or tanks removed during heating upgrades. Each change can leave gaps in the insulation that nobody noticed at the time.

Common problems across all three

  • Insulation squashed under storage boards
  • Uninsulated or draughty loft hatches
  • Patchy coverage at the eaves and around obstacles
  • Condensation on felt or on stored items
  • Access only by a stepladder through a narrow hatch

Brough is close to the Humber and low-lying in places, but we do not assume that means a problem in your loft. If a survey shows signs of damp, rot or electrical concerns, we will say so and recommend a qualified specialist.

How SuperQuilt and other materials fit

We install SuperQuilt multifoil from YBS Insulation. It is thin and flexible, which helps when a homeowner wants to keep storage or when access is tight. Multifoils must be fitted carefully, with sealed joints and the right air gaps, and their published performance applies to tested assemblies rather than any single home.

Mineral wool and PIR boards are both valid choices, and in some Brough homes one of those, or a combination, is the better option. Our loft insulation page compares the approaches, and we will explain our reasoning in person.

Whatever is installed, the loft still needs ventilation. We keep airflow paths clear and talk through condensation risk in general terms.

Storage and access

Many people in newer Brough homes ask us about storage first and insulation second. Raised loft boarding lets you store boxes, luggage and seasonal items without flattening the insulation. We also fit loft ladders and insulated hatches to make access safer. Some owners choose a full loft makeover with lighting and a tidy floor. Whether or not you already have a ladder or boards, we can help.

What the free survey covers

We visit, look at the hatch and how you get into the loft, check the insulation and visible timbers, and look at ventilation, tanks and pipework. Then we talk through the options and send a written recommendation. There is no obligation and no rush.

Tell us how you hope to use the loft. Commuters who work from home sometimes want a spare room above them to be warmer, while others just want somewhere safe to keep suitcases. The answer shapes where insulation goes and how boarding is laid out.

If you live in a new home that is still under a builder's warranty, check whether any alterations affect it before work begins. We are happy to talk this through at the survey.

Practical notes for Brough

Newer estates generally have driveways, which keeps access simple. Streets near the station and the older centre can be busier, especially at commuting times, so we plan arrival times accordingly. Brough sits within our Hull and East Riding area, and you can call 07835 254 241 to book.

Our services in Brough

Loft Insulation

New loft insulation, top-ups and replacement of old, flattened or damp material. We check what you have, explain the options plainly and fit it neatly, with or without an existing ladder or boarding.

SuperQuilt Multifoil Insulation

SuperQuilt is a thin, multi-layer reflective insulation made by YBS Insulation. We explain how it works, where it suits and where it does not, and fit it with the air gaps and taped joints it relies on.

Roof and Rafter Insulation

Insulation fitted at rafter level for lofts used for storage, hobby space or rooms in the roof. We plan it around ventilation, the roof underlay and moisture control, and involve a roofer where needed.

Loft Ladders and Hatches

Timber or aluminium loft ladders in folding, sliding or concertina styles, plus hatch enlarging, insulated and draught-sealed hatches. Safe, easy access whether or not you have insulation work done too.

Loft Boarding and Storage

Raised loft boarding on legs so storage sits above the insulation rather than squashing it. Safe walkways, sensible storage layouts and lighting, with honest advice on what joists can carry.

Loft Makeovers

Insulation, loft ladder, insulated hatch, raised boarding and lighting planned together and fitted in the right order, so you get a warm home below and a tidy, usable storage loft above.

Wall Insulation

Cavity, internal and external wall insulation explained in plain English. We survey your walls, check exposure, cavity condition and signs of damp, and give honest advice on what suits your home.

Loft Surveys and Condensation Checks

A careful look at your loft: insulation depth and condition, condensation and ventilation, old or wet material, and a plain-English walk-through of where heat may be escaping. Specialist issues are referred on.

Loft insulation in Brough: FAQs

Do you cover Brough, Elloughton and the HU15 area?

Yes. Brough, Elloughton, Welton and surrounding HU15 villages are within our core Hull and East Riding coverage. Some outlying addresses may need checking, so send your postcode through the contact form and we will confirm before arranging a free survey.

My new-build home already has loft insulation. Can I still board it?

Yes, but it needs doing properly. Boards laid straight onto joists can crush the insulation and reduce its effectiveness. We fit raised boarding that sits above the insulation. Check whether any builder's warranty is affected first, and we will plan the layout around trusses and ventilation.

Is SuperQuilt suitable for a post-war semi in Brough?

It can be. SuperQuilt is slim, which helps if you want storage space or have tight access. Mineral wool and PIR are also good options. Multifoil performance depends on correct fitting and air gaps, and manufacturer figures relate to tested build-ups. We will recommend what suits your loft.

Can you fit a loft ladder at the same time as insulation?

Yes, and many people do both together. We can fit a ladder and an insulated, draught-sealed hatch so the loft is easier and safer to reach. If you already have a ladder, we can keep it or replace it. We will discuss options during the survey.

Do you work on older cottages around Brough and Elloughton?

We do. Older properties can have irregular timbers, chimney breasts and delicate ceilings, so they need careful handling. We pay close attention to ventilation and anything that might need a specialist's view. If your home is listed, check with East Riding of Yorkshire Council before alterations.
